Electric car maker Tesla has traditionally operated without advertising, but now CEO Elon Musk wants to break that streak. “We’ll try a little publicity and see how it goes,” Musk said Tuesday in Texas.
Due to the high demand, Tesla has not needed paid advertising for a long time. Musk has used his popularity and other mediums as marketing tools – most notably the online platform Twitter, which he has since acquired. But this seems to be increasingly exhausted – this year Tesla has lowered prices several times.
Musk told US CNBC after the Tesla shareholder meeting in Austin, Texas, that Tesla does not yet have a mature announcement plan. “I just agreed to it, there is no complete strategy yet.” However, paid advertising could be a way to expand Tesla’s customer base. The e-car pioneer is pursuing ambitious growth targets, but competition is getting fiercer. There is also the risk of economic headwinds. Musk said that not even Tesla is “immune” to recessionary risks. He expects a difficult economic environment in the next twelve months.
