In Mühlhausen, cyclists should be given more space on the streets. This is provided by the new bike path concept for the city and the nine boroughs. It contains 278 proposed changes to the existing 195 km trail network. Among other things, one-way streets will be opened for cyclists, and lanes must be noted. The new concept also aims to ensure that cycle paths become more continuous and safer.

The proposed changes relate to opening new signs, traffic lights or one-way streets to cyclists. Planner Heike Prahlo named Bastmarkt, Martinstrasse and Goethwig in Mühlhausen as examples of landmarks. The current cycle path on Martinistrasse should be wider or better defined. There is no protection bar for cyclists in Kreuzgraben. But there is a road show. On Eisenacher Straße from the direction of Lindenbühl, a cycle path can be envisioned on the road; And also because the footpath is very narrow. Here the road should become a single lane instead of the current two lanes.

Online survey with over 700 respondents

Before the concept was introduced, more than 700 people between the ages of 10 and 79 participated in an online survey. Responsible planner Heike Prahlo from Hanover said the desire for wider, separate cycle paths had been repeatedly expressed there. There were 50 listeners at the first cycle track concept presentation on Wednesday night.

One-way streets must be opened

According to this concept, one-way streets should be opened quickly. Erfurterstraße, Schilroegg, Felstairstraße, Wallstrasse, Judenstraße, Brückenstraße and Rosenstraße, among others, have been proposed.

Example Germaniastieg

Germaniastieg is the main road in Mühlhausen’s bicycle network. Also because it is part of the Unstrut cycle path and connects to the train station from the north. Proposed solutions according to the concept: widening the path and adding lighting.

Example: Kreuzgraben

Kreuzgraben is also a major road. 6,300 vehicles pass through here daily. The planners’ solution: to mark the route west of Hauptmannstrasse using pictograms; Locate a protective strip east of Hauptmannstrasse. At the Kiliansgraben intersection, the lane for cyclists traveling straight ahead must be marked with pictograms, and cyclists heading north and south must be directed to the side area in advance.

Pure bike streets

Routes designated for cyclists only have also been proposed, especially near schools: for example Schwabenstrasse, Ruhrstrasse, Ammersche Landstrasse, Karl-Marx-Strasse and Forstbergstrasse.

What else is bike fit?

But more is needed to become a bike-friendly city. Cycling network, cycle paths, cycling facilities in the network of roads and paths, signs, cycle garages at the destination and at home. Mayor Pete Seale says a bike garage is planned for the train station area.

City Council debates and decides in December

According to Mayor Pete Seale (RR), the concept should get the green light from the City Council by the end of the year. Implementation of the first points of the concept is scheduled for next year. There will also be a bike lane at the new roundabout in Pfortenteich. It is also planned to build a bicycle lane in the long term.
