Rishi Sunak is the new Prime Minister of Great Britain.
Rishi Sunak (42) stepped up the race for the Conservative Party. His only remaining opponent, Penny Mordaunt, 49, withdrew on Monday. At the beginning of September, Sunak lost to Liz Truss (47) in the race to succeed Boris Johnson (58). Truss resigned on Thursday after six turbulent weeks. Britain is a great country, but we are going through a serious economic crisis. “This is why I want to lead the Conservative Party and become the next Prime Minister,” Sunak wrote on Twitter on Sunday.
Nominations can still be received through Monday afternoon. However, according to “The Economist”, Sunak already had more than hundreds of necessary supporters in the group. So the decision was made early. Who is the suddenly prominent Sunak, who on Tuesday was formally inaugurated only by King Charles III. Needs approval?
He is one of the richest Britons
Sunak was born in Southampton, England, and is of Indian descent. He also recognized himself as a Hindu. He attended the elite boarding school Winchester College in southwest England, studied philosophy, politics and economics at Lincoln College in Oxford and earned an MBA from Stanford University in California.
At Stanford he met his now-wife Akshata Murti (42), the daughter of a billionaire. Her father, Bill Gates, is considered an Indian. According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2022, Sunnack and Morty are the 222th richest in the UK and their fortune is estimated at around £730 million. The couple has two daughters and a Labrador named Nova.
After graduating from college, Sunak worked as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs and later as a partner at hedge fund firm The Children’s Investment Fund Management and Theleme Partners. He has been a Member of Parliament for North Yorkshire in the British House of Commons since 2015, where he has enjoyed an astonishing height. Like Liz Truss, Sunak supports Brexit, and the two differ on nuances, as became evident in the September election campaign. But overall, he’s not as strict as them.

Johnson “Kingslayer”?
In addition, he is not without controversy in the Conservative Party, which is why he lost to Truss at that time. Because Sunak was Treasurer under former Prime Minister Johnson and contributed to his downfall – he was considered the “Killer of Kings” and had some Conservatives against him. Now, perhaps for tactical reasons, Snack tweets that Johnson has led the country through some of the toughest challenges. “We will always be grateful to him for that.”
Many MPs now credit Sunak with his repeated campaign warning of the same chaos that Truss unleashed on financial markets with her economic policy. Truss campaigned for debt-funded tax cuts. However, Sunak also spoke out in favor of lower taxes.
His position has not been fully clarified
One should not forget that the conservatives wanted to find a successor quickly. Labor leader Angela Rayner said ahead of the decision: “The Conservatives are on the cusp of handing Sunak the keys to Downing Street without a word on how he wants to govern.”
The optimism that arose with Sunak’s nomination was palpable, at least in the markets. The British pound strengthened in a short period of time.
