More environment: Will Max-Joseph-Platz become the new Gärtnerplatz?

More environment: Will Max-Joseph-Platz become the new Gärtnerplatz?

Munich Traditional vs. Unconventional: The debate over a temporary green space in front of the National Theater is making waves. The Greens were dreaming of the tall grass and beds of wild plants in front of the National Theatre.

However, “Hands off Max Josef Platz” accurately names those responsible for the monument’s restoration – out of respect for the historical group. Matthias Weil, who is responsible for the preservation of monuments in Bavaria, does not want the earth to be green. The construction department now starts looking for a middle ground.

Redesign at Max-Joseph-Platz: “The most beautiful squares in Munich have their share of green”

Munich architect Christoph Sattler, who founded the office Hilmer Sattler Architekten in 1976, was a member of the Urban Design Committee. When redesigning the Old Town Square, he advocated “low farms”.

AZ: Mr. Sattler, most of your fellow architects on the committee don’t see a “pasture of flowers on the Capitol Building.” They are more relaxed – and prefer a green meadow on Max Josef Platz. For what reason?
Christoph Sattler: Munich’s most beautiful squares, Odeonsplatz, Wittelsbacherplatz, Königsplatz, Promenadeplatz, Gartnerplatz, all have a certain amount of green in them. I can imagine the green in the roundabout in Obernplatz, like low farming. I love a solution like this one on Gärtnerplatz.

Munich architect: “The preservation of monuments has the last word”

What exactly do you like about Gärtnerplatz?
I sit there in the café examining life in the square. I think the greenery there is very well done, aesthetically top notch. Many people are sitting on the benches. When I was there, some were lying on the grass. However, I would find an absolutely entertaining atmosphere at Max-Joseph-Platz as a break in style. I can imagine seats on the edge of the vertigo.

During the day, Gärtnerplatz is a real idyllic place with its flowers, especially when the weather is nice.

In Munich, Marienplatz is a bourgeois square, Max Josef Platz is king. Do you feel this way?
This is possible. The square, which houses the residence, the State Theater and the Opera, reflects the charm and nobility of Munich.

Do you understand that conservative Munichers are screaming when it comes to perennials in their chic Opera Square?
That’s a reasonable feeling. The large asphalt surface is also perceived as unpleasant.

The green in front of the Opera is intended to counteract the heat in the city

Please explain why you are open to greening the historical collection?
City greening is becoming increasingly important. Climate change can be directly observed, which is expressed in the Munich City Council by a green majority.

You are a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in residence. The entrance at Max-Joseph-Platz is the entrance. Are you there often?
On my way to the Academy, I turn the corner to the magnificent Max-Joseph-Platz and walk along the stone bench plinth of the royal residence of the Residenz. I think it is one of the most beautiful spots in Munich. Sometimes I sit there and think the square must be a nicely paved area. I see people going shopping and driving cars down spindles. In fact, the only thing that bothers me is the big SUV you can’t see through. Ferraris are low, like dogs. You can see well above them (He laughs).

Max Josef Platz in Munich: low plantings, cast-iron tubs or small trees?

Can you understand the archaeological preservation’s adamant refusal to allow grazing in the area?
I see it this way: For the historic Max-Joseph-Platz, preservation of monuments takes precedence, the last word. That’s why she’s so strict about it now. But partial greening can be attempted at Max-Joseph-Platz. Because I understand climate change as a real social break. He has to express himself in his place.

What would a permanent solution to the square in front of the opera look like?
For lower plantings, as in Gärtnerplatzrondell, cast iron pans like those on Brienner Strasse would be used – not concrete rings. The four small trees currently in front of the Opera look very good. The cut trees would probably be nicer.

You are from Munich, but you graduated from high school in Rome. Our Max-Joseph-Platz model is said to be the Capitoline Square in Rome. Are the two places the same?
The Roman square is symmetrical, has a continuous decorated stone pavement and is much smaller than Max Josef Platz. Classical Munich is more oriented towards Florence.
