Petra Vlhova falls badly during the giant slalom in Jasna. A bitter setback for the Slovakian – also in the ball fight.

Local champion Petra Vlhova started the race in Jasna with start number 4, but did not make it to the finish. The Slovak fell hard and had to be carried away after a long break. As she was being whisked away, she was at least able to wave to several fans before covering her sore face again.

It was depressing early on our first stop in Slovakia in 3 years. The crowd, who were of course hoping for a home win, also supported the other riders – but much less vocally and frantically than before. It is currently unclear whether Vlhova has been injured and how serious it is.

As the Slovakian team announced later, the athlete's condition was stable and he was taken to hospital for further examinations.

No duel with Shiffrin

The 28-year-old's failure also affected Sunday's slalom. The great duel between Mikaela Shiffrin and Petra Vlhova should have qualified her to the next round. Now it seems impossible for the Slovakian to start. This leaves the door open for Shiffrin to advance in both the slalom and overall World Cup rankings.
