Republicans are threatening to fire the Homeland Security secretary
Alejandro Mayorgas was accused of not doing enough to protect the border. Therefore, the Secretary of Homeland Security should be removed from office.
Republican lawmakers accuse U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of neglecting his duty to secure the border and want to open impeachment proceedings against him. “Secretary Meyergas' refusal to comply with the law is sufficient grounds for impeachment,” House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green said Wednesday.
Republicans accused the Democratic minister of “deliberately” fueling the crisis with “gross incompetence” and “year-long refusal to enforce laws passed by Congress.”
Republicans are fiercely critical of President Joe Biden's administration's immigration policy: in December, 10,000 illegal immigrants from Mexico were arrested every day — representing, in the words of Republicans, a “humanitarian disaster.”
Removing Mayorkas from office would require an impeachment hearing in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, followed by a conviction in the Senate, where Democrats have a narrow majority and can block action.
A vote in the House of Representatives to remove the Homeland Security secretary is expected at the end of January and appears to have a good chance of success.
The US government has called the impeachment action against Mayorkas a “baseless and pointless” political ploy, while pointing out that a request to Congress for $14 billion in additional border security funding has been blocked for months.
