Destruction caused by a hurricane – United States of America: dead and dozens injured after a hurricane – news

  • A huge tornado struck the small town of Greenfield, Iowa.
  • Authorities said several people were killed and at least ten others were injured.
  • The hurricane destroyed homes and parts of the infrastructure.

“This tornado destroyed a large portion of this city,” Alex Dinkla, a spokesman for the Iowa State Patrol, said during a news conference in Greenfield. “We can confirm that there were many deaths in this tornado.”

He said he assumed all the city's missing residents had been found. Adair County Health System said in a Facebook post that it has set up a triage center at Greenfield High School and that people who need medical care should go there.

Because of damage to the local hospital caused by the storm, people had to be transferred to facilities in nearby cities. “I've lived in Greenfield my whole life. Valerie Warrior, a resident of the affected town, told CBS: “I just pray that everyone is safe and that no one is hurt.” “It was scary, very scary.” Other footage showed smashed cars and severe damage to a gas station.

The authorities imposed a mandatory curfew on the city that continued until Wednesday morning. On Tuesday evening, they also issued instructions to media representatives to leave the city.

Greenfield is the county seat of Adair County. There are always such storms in the area. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds declared a “disaster emergency” in 15 counties, including Adair and the seat of nearby Adams County. In Adams County, at least three wind turbines broke in half, and one caught fire, KCCI reported.

The storms later moved east, hitting parts of Illinois and Wisconsin, cutting off power to more than 130,000 homes in these two states.

The National Weather Service has issued additional tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of Iowa and other Midwestern states.
