Address to the nation – Biden calls for party cooperation
US President Joe Biden has symbolically spoken from the Oval Office for the first time since taking office after a debt settlement was reached.
After a cross-party deal to resolve the US debt crisis, President Joe Biden called for cooperation between Democrats and Republicans. In a highly symbolic appearance, Biden celebrated avoiding government default on Friday evening (local time) and warned that there is no way around nonpartisan cooperation in such dramatic situations. “It could not have been more at risk,” the Democrat said in a speech to the nation from the Oval Office in the White House. “We have averted an economic crisis and an economic collapse.”
It was Biden’s first official address to the nation from the Oval Office since taking office nearly two and a half years ago. Such speeches from the president’s office at the headquarters of government are rarely broadcast live on American television in prime time and are reserved for important situations and critical situations.
A deal after weeks of nail-biting
The US Congress averted a last-minute government default by passing a bill on Thursday. In the United States, Parliament sets the debt ceiling at irregular intervals to determine how much the state can borrow. Biden’s Democrats were able to agree only after weeks of nailing down a compromise with Republicans. According to the finance ministry, without this the government would have run out of money on Monday. A default in the world’s largest economy could have triggered a global financial crisis and economic collapse.
Biden announced he would sign the legislation on Saturday.
