Daniil Medvedev was difficult to calm down. “Open your eyes, open your damned eyes!” “It's over!” complained the hotheaded Russian tennis player during his round of 16 match against compatriot Karen Khachanov at the ATP 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo (3:6, 5:7). His tirade was directed at referee Carlos Bernardes, who saw a ball from Khachanov on the court supposedly fell out of bounds when the score was 5:5 in the second set.
“Who bears responsibility for something like this? The referee doesn't need glasses because he can't see anyway. He shouldn't be a referee,” the 26-year-old demanded in a conversation with the tournament director. The fourth in the world rankings was awarded a penalty point for his whim. Medvedev had already received a warning when he threw his racket away after a double fault.
Medvedev, known for his temper tantrums and heated discussions with referees, had already lost his temper in his opening match against Frenchman Gael Monfils.
