US presidential elections a year later
A close race between incumbent President Joe Biden and Donald Trump is once again emerging.
On November 5, 2024 — roughly one year later — the United States will elect its president. Important political decisions are made at the beginning of the year (see table). Democrats are expected to nominate current President Biden again. Among Republicans, former President Trump leads the field of candidates by a large margin. The election campaign will gain full momentum after the nomination at the latest.
Anyway, it will be exciting. Because the majority of seats in both houses of the US Congress are very narrow. Democrats were able to narrowly defend their majority in the Senate after the midterm elections a year ago, and Republicans have advanced slightly in the House since then. In any case, it will be important for financial markets that there is no “hanging match” that the Supreme Court may have to decide. By the way: After Trump’s unexpected election victory in 2016 and Biden’s eventual clear win, stocks started to rise – and not just in the USA.
