Berlin Opponents know each other well. Saxony-Anhalt’s economics minister Sven Scholz (CDU) and Rent-Gruppe, head of the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH), have been arguing for months. Politician Scholz certainly wants to bring US chipmaker Intel to Magdeburg – with the help of state aid. The economist Grubb considers this a grave mistake.
Schulz and Grubb recently attempted an explanatory conversation behind closed doors — with moderate success. The Handelsblatts brought the two together for the first time for a public debate on neutral ground in Berlin. In the Federal Council meeting room, it doesn’t take long for discussions to get heated.
