Is it a four-wheel drive car? Is it a hatchback? No, it’s a Peugeot 408. The latest litter from the French brand with the lion in its logo wants to be something completely unique. Linda Jackson, CEO of Peugeot, announced at the unveiling ceremony the “408 of a new breed of automobile.”
But this format does not seem new to us. Our first thought: With a sloping roofline, the 408 is an SUV coupe. But product manager Jerome Micheron vehemently denies this. “The 408 is not an SUV coupe. It’s way too shallow for it! It is more of a dynamic fastback.”

Admittedly, while similar competitors remind us of cats with a hump, the new 408 is significantly flatter – just 1.48 meters high and 4.69 meters long. The comparison with the sedan hatchback isn’t wrong, but the 408 eventually joins the ranks of other coupe-SUVs with extra ground clearance and a higher seating position.
The sloping roof ends with a muscular rear end with wide wheel arches and promises sporty distinction. as a starting point New 308. This can be seen in the front, even if the grille has a new pattern, which will decorate other Peugeot models in the future. The difference between the grill and the body should disappear with the paint, similar to many electric cars.
Gasoline engines and auxiliary components
But for now, the 408 isn’t available as an electric version. But this will follow later, probably like the 308 with 156 hp (115 kW) and a range of about 400 km. Otherwise there is a Peugeot fare for the drives. As in the 308, a 130 hp (96 kW) petrol engine and plug-in 180 and 225 hp (132 and 165 kW) deliver propulsion, all with an 8-speed automatic transmission as standard. The diesel version is not only offered in Europe.
The electrical range of the additional components is not yet known. But it should be just under 60 kilometers short of the 308’s little brother. As with this, the 408 will only be available with front-wheel drive. Every wheel is still 3008 as well 508 PSE Athletic Reserved, even a similar sports version is not planned for the 408.
Spacious and useful
Despite the sleek body, Peugeot promises travel-ready space in the rear. The cargo area ranges from 536 to 1611 liters for the petrol engine. The electric tailgate is standard.
Inside, the driver looks at the small Peugeot steering wheel known for the instruments on top of it. In the center there is a 10-inch touch screen with freely selectable shortcuts as on the 308. With the 408, Peugeot launches the next generation of driving assistants. Six cameras and nine radars monitor the surroundings for a total of 30 assistance systems. For the first time there will be a night vision device in Peugeot.
The new 408 will be launched early next year. Prices are not yet known. But it should be between 33,900 and 42,110 francs. These are the entry prices for the 308 and 3008, between which Peugeot wants to put the 408.
