“We hope that both sides will improve their mutual understanding, reduce misunderstandings and miscalculations, and jointly put US-China relations on a healthy and stable course,” state television quoted the Chinese president as saying. He believes US vice presidents will play an “active role” in this. State TV has insisted that the meeting was held at the request of the US side.
A White House official said Harris “briefly welcomed” Xi Jinping before attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. The U.S. vice president reiterated Biden’s message that “in order to responsibly manage the rivalry between our nations, the channels of communication between the two sides must remain open.”
Chinese state television also quoted Harris as saying the meeting between Xi Jinping and Biden was successful. America does not seek confrontation or conflict with China. Both sides should cooperate in world affairs.
