Belinda Bencic (WTA 11) reached the quarterfinals at the WTA Championships in Charleston. For the Swiss, the defending champion in the clay court championships in the US state of South Carolina, reaching the quarter-finals was a difficult task. The 26-year-old needed 2:43 hours to achieve victory in 4: 6, 7: 5, 6: 2 over American Shelby Rogers (WTA 44).
Bencic managed to make it 2-0 in all three rounds with a break. But because she lost a 4:1 lead in the starting pool and didn’t win a match anymore, she had to go the distance.
The Eastern Swiss women managed to equalize judgments at the last opportunity. When the score was 6: 5, Bencic had two break chances, the first of which he took advantage of. The 30-year-old Rogers made a clear backhand to the side.
Reunion with Alexandrova
In the deciding set, Bencic was pressured again only after breaking through to make it 2-0 on his serve. With the score 4:4, she blocked two break opportunities before managing another break to win the match in the follow-up.
The opponent in the quarterfinals is Ekaterina Alexandrova (WTA 17). Bencic only played against the Russian in Miami two weeks ago – and lost in two sets in the third round. If the Swiss is to continue her mission of defending her title in Charleston, the successful revenge is on Alexandroua.
