The group stage of the Ice Hockey World Championships has ended in Finland. The following quarter-final pairs will be played on Thursday:

  • Switzerland – United States, 7:20 pm in Helsinki (Live on SRF zwei and in the sports app)

As the group winner, Switzerland is the favorite against the Americans, who have made a mixed impression at this tournament so far. The win against Sweden was fantastic. But there were defeats against Finland and the Czech Republic. Austria was defeated only after extra time.

  • Sweden – Canada, 15:20 in Tampere

As at the Olympics in February, the two hockey giants will meet in the quarter-finals. In Beijing, Sweden won 2-0 with two goals in the past ten minutes, losing to Russia in the semi-finals.

  • Finland – Slovakia, 19:20 in Tampere

Olympic champion vs. Olympic bronze medalist: Despite the exciting starting position, anything other than Finland’s World Cup progress on home soil would be a surprise. Coach Jukka Jalonen’s team only lost to Sweden in the group stage, also on penalties.

  • Germany – Czech Republic, 15:20 in Helsinki

After participating in the semi-finals last year, a difficult task awaits the Germans. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic lost a quarter-final rehearsal against Finland, while Toni Soderholm’s team snatched a point from unbeaten Switzerland. Czech Lakers striker Roman Cervenka ranks second behind Denis Malgin in the list of top scorers in the World Cup (3 goals and 8 assists).
