Graubünden heptathlete won her first medal in a major event in Munich with a new Swiss record.

Annick Kalin was responsible for Switzerland’s first ever European Championships seven medal at the European Championships in Munich. The woman from Graubünden achieved a new personal best in the last 800 metres, and with that equal performance, she took the bronze medal.

With a total of 6,515 points, she also improved her Swiss record, which she scored at the World Championships in Eugene. In Oregon, Kälin totaled 6,644 points.

800m to tip the scales

The 800m isn’t actually one of Kalin’s greatest strengths. In the battle of the precious metal against her direct competitors Adriana Solek and Nor Wiedets, it became clear that the 22-year-old had to beat her best in order to have a chance to win the precious metal. Kälin, who had finished second before the last seventh discipline, did this admirably. With a time of 2:13.73, she improved her best time by 3.5 seconds.

Poland’s Solek won the 800m, overtaking Kalin. Belgium’s Wiedets left Switzerland behind thanks to their flip on the double stadium tour. In the end, Kalin was only 17 points behind silver-winner Sollick, while the Belgian was 48 points behind her.

Long jump as a door opener

Thanks to the powerful long jump, Kalin was able to dream of a medal in the last 800 meters. In the fifth discipline, she jumped 6.73 metres, thus unparalleled in her career. With a javelin, Kalin failed to meet expectations with 46.72 metres. However, before the final pack, I advanced from third to second on the double-pitch roll. Dutchman Anouk Vetter, considered a strong javelin thrower, did not compete for sixth place.

Kalin laid the foundation for Switzerland’s 10th medal at the current European Championships on Wednesday. With the fastest time of all the athletes in the 100-meter hurdles, she had an excellent start to the competition. Grison also had strong performances in the high jump (1.74m) and over 200m (24.14sec).

Gold is a favorite morsel of Thiam

The gold medal went to the first candidate, Nafisatu Thiam. The highly decorated Belgian showed mediocre competition for her standards, especially on the second day. The 27-year-old, who is also a two-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion, has not been seriously threatened with the 27-year-old’s second European title.

Thiam won with a total of 6,628 points. At the World Championships in Eugene, the 27-year-old scored 6,947 points.
