Wimbledon 2nd Round – Decision Postponed: Wawrinka vs Monfils Too Late – Sports

  • Stan Wawrinka (ATP 95) is in danger of being eliminated in the second round of Wimbledon against Gael Monfils (ATP 33).
  • Due to darkness, the match was stopped at 9:24 pm local time and the score was 6:7 (5:7), 4:6, 5:5 from the Swiss point of view.
  • The decision will be made on Thursday. The match will continue at around 2 pm Swiss time.

After the break, when the score was 5:4 to Stan Wawrinka in the third set, the referee Marijana Velovic informed the opponents that due to the increasingly poor light conditions, only one game could be played. The Swiss did everything he could to reduce the set to at least 1:2 before the end of the first set. But Gaël Monfils had something against him and did not allow any more fast balls.

So the Frenchman went to bed on Wednesday night feeling much better than Wawrinka, who was able to stay well for long periods but was only the second-best player on Court 2 at crucial moments.

Annoying mistakes at the wrong time

The clash between 39-year-old Wawrinka and 37-year-old Monfils started very evenly, with both players dominating the serve. It was Romand who came out of nowhere to win the first break at 4:4 in the first round. Wawrinka started well, but then pushed a supposedly easy forehand out of bounds.

In the end, a tiebreak had to be decided in the first round. All the first ten points went to the server in question, and then it was Wawrinka who made the error. There was no need to ask Monfils twice and he immediately took his first opportunity to take the set 1-0.

The best atmosphere in the stands

While Monfils took the momentum with him, Wawrinka was no longer able to match his opponent in the second round. An early break to make it 2-1 – and the only one until the break in the third set – meant the decision went in the Frenchman’s favour.

Led by a passionate London crowd, with the score at 4:4 in the third round, Wawrinka managed to fend off three break points against Monfils and stay in the match. The fans on Court 2 witnessed several engaging encounters between the two good friends during the nearly two hours of play.

And continued on Thursday

Wawrinka has a huge task ahead of him if he is to repeat his performance at Wimbledon last year and reach the third round. The match is scheduled to resume on Thursday on the same court and does not start until 2 p.m. Swiss time. SRF is broadcasting the decision live.
