FIFA President since February 2016: Gianni Infantino.
Gianni Infantino may remain FIFA president until 2031. Following the council meeting in Doha, Valaisi said that during the consultations in the IFA Council, it was made clear that “I am in my first term”.
Infantino has been leading FIFA since February 2016. The 52-year-old, former UEFA general secretary, took over from Sepp Blatter, who resigned, midway through the current term. The first years as president do not officially count as a first term.
Next March, he will run for re-election unopposed to Congress in the Rwandan capital, Kigali. The 52-year-old said his second term would begin. According to the statutes, the FIFA President can be elected for a maximum of three terms of four years each.
It was also announced at Infantino’s media conference that the Club World Cup should be held with the participation of 32 teams from 2025. The next edition will be held from February 1 to 11 in Morocco in the previous format (with seven teams).
FIFA is also planning a new competition for national teams. A mini-tournament with teams from different continents, the FIFA World Championship, will be held every two years. In addition, the World League wants to combine the previous two international game windows in September and October into a longer window of four games from 2025.
The current World Cup was also an issue in Doha. Infantino came to a very positive conclusion on the controversial tournament. “For me, the World Cup was an amazing success in all areas,” he said. Football “united” the world. There wasn’t a single negative incident, it was “unique”.
