wiha Panthers Schwenningen kicks off the 2021/22 ProA season with a (almost) all-new squad. However, there are no limits to optimism and demands.

The mood at wiha Panthers Schwenningen’s season opening press conference was one of fervor. Coach Alain Velcic and his players showed some optimism. The 50-year-old set his usual fighting goal: “We want to play at the top. Put 4 – and thus the home in the first playoff – it should be!”

Velcic will try to take another step forward with his third-year team in ProA, Germany’s second-highest league. The fact that this is a brand new team, with the exception of new captain Chris Frazier, makes this even more difficult – but that’s what Schoeningen is used to: “Of course there are many players every year that we’d like to keep,” said Velcic. “But if the offers are from BBL or you get five times the salary at another club, then we can’t keep up.”

So once again a team that was completely different had to be created again. However, nothing will change about Schwenninger’s basketball identity: The best defense of the last ProA season wanted to push their opponents into despair again on a regular basis. “To defend you do not need talent, you need passion and heart,” Alen Velcic’s philosophy has not changed. Accordingly, the newcomers were evaluated and signed: “It is very difficult to gather twelve individuals with twelve base stories and ensure that they work as a team within a few weeks of preparation.” Schwenninger’s claims are still higher than ever – despite Velcic speaking of “the best ProA ever”. The best position in the club’s history has to come from the best ProA ever. So is this Panthers team the best ever? “That’s hard to say. Who determines what’s good and what’s bad? It doesn’t have to be the best leopard. Maybe it’s the smartest or the most adaptable leopard. We are convinced that this squad will help us achieve goals, otherwise we wouldn’t have brought the boys,” says Allen Felicic.

Velcic and his team didn’t let themselves be fazed by the difficult opening program and the fact that with Lamonte Bearden’s departure and David Cohen’s signing on guard position, a sudden change was imminent. “Our goal is to give everything in every game and leave the floor as the winner. It doesn’t matter when you play against whom. The other teams also have a lot of inflows and outflows. We will be good again this year role playing!”
