Whoopi Goldberg (66) caused an uproar with a statement about the Holocaust. The American actress denied Nazi racism against Jews during the afternoon talk show “The View” she ran. “The Holocaust is not about racism,” Goldberg said repeatedly. Then she added: “It is about the inhuman treatment of a human being by another human being.” The reason for the discussion was the controversial ban of the award-winning comic “Mouse” in a school district in Tennessee. It is about a Holocaust survivor.
Co-coordinator Ana Navarro (50) had a different opinion, interrupting Goldberg and emphasizing, “It’s about white supremacy. That’s it. It’s about the persecution of Jews and travelers.” Goldberg replied that these two groups are white. “Let’s talk about what’s going on. It’s about how people treat each other. It doesn’t matter if you’re black, white or Jewish, it’s about us.”
Criticisms of Jewish Organizations
Whoopi Goldberg has been heavily criticized for her statement. Jonathan Greenblatt (51), CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, which campaigns against discrimination against Jews, addressed Goldberg directly on Twitter: “No, Whoopi Goldberg, the Holocaust was about the systematic extermination of Jews by the Nazis – whom they consider an inferior race. They stripped them.” of their humanity and used this racist propaganda to justify the slaughter of six million Jews. Underestimating the Holocaust is dangerous.”
It sounded similar on the Twitter accounts of the US Holocaust Museum and the American Jewish Committee.
Whoopi Goldberg apologizes
Then the American actress apologized on Twitter. “On today’s show I said the Holocaust is not about racism, but about the inhumane treatment of one human being by another. I should have said it’s about both,” Whoopi Goldberg writes.
She also quoted Jonathan Greenblatt’s statement and admitted her mistake: “Jews all over the world have always had my support and that will not change. I regret the pain I have caused.” He ended with the caption: “Written with my sincerest apologies, Whoopi Goldberg.” (BSN)
