Wesley Fofana: Chelsea’s top scorer leaves the pitch in tears

MGoalkeeper Ilan Ciprien Tatarusano bounced the ball forward. Chaos reigned in the Italian penalty area. He plunged so many feet into the ball that Wesley Fofana thrust into it and put it in from close range to make Chelsea 1-0. The central defender joyfully celebrated his first goal with the Blues.

But 14 minutes into the goal, Fofana was shocked: the 21-year-old got stuck in the grass and seriously injured himself. The Frenchman had to be substituted in the 38th minute of Chelsea’s 3-0 win over AC Milan in the Champions League.

When Fofana left the arena, he cried bitterly. On the one hand, perhaps because of the pain, on the other hand because of the memory of another serious injury. Just last year, Fofana came out seven months after breaking his fibula. At the time, the France Under-21 international was still playing for Leicester City before moving to Chelsea last summer for €80m.

This time too, serious injury is feared. After the match he could only leave the field on crutches.

Chelsea are on their way to the eighth final

This was Chelsea’s first win in the current Champions League season. The other goals were scored by former Dortmund player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (56) and Reece James (62). Aubameyang’s goal was Chelsea’s 300th European Cup goal at home at Stamford Bridge.

“It was a very good and focused performance from us. The only drawback is Wesley Fofana’s injury,” Chelsea coach Graham Potter said. Chelsea are now second in the table behind Salzburg with four points. Milan are third with equal points, ahead of Dinamo Zagreb, who lost 1-0 to Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel.
