Walmart is expanding delivery with drones in the US

Walmart wants to deliver its goods by drones to more US states in the future. In this way, up to one million packages can be distributed in one year.

The basics in brief

  • Walmart wants to significantly expand its drone delivery offerings in the United States.
  • The supermarket giant wants to deliver more than a million packages within a year.

The American supermarket giant Walmart is significantly expanding the range of product delivery by drones. Service with the drones will be offered at 34 locations in six US states throughout the year. Walmart announced this on Tuesday.

This can serve four million families in Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Utah and Virginia. “This gives us the ability to deliver over a million packages by drone in a year,” she says.

In the future, customers will be able to place an order between 8am and 8pm and choose from tens of thousands of products. In some cases, it can be delivered within half an hour. The service cost is $3.99 and the total weight for delivery can be up to 4.5kg.

Walmart Collaboration With Startup

Walmart is collaborating with startup DroneUp on the project. The two companies have already decided to partner in 2020, but the offer is limited so far. Walmart said on Tuesday that “hundreds of deliveries within months” were made via DroneUp.

The world’s largest retailer isn’t alone in the drone delivery race. Online retailer Amazon, parent company of Google Alphabet and logistics giant UPS are also active in this sector. One factor in particular gives Walmart an advantage: About 90 percent of American citizens live within a ten-mile radius of one of the nation’s largest Walmart stores.
