Unusual winter storm brings snow to Southern California
Conditions were dire at times in Los Angeles and other parts of California: snow-covered streets, unusual rainfall and hundreds of thousands of people without power.
The worst winter storm in decades brought unusually large amounts of snow to California on Friday. In fact the south of the US state, known for a lot of sun, was covered in a somewhat dense blanket of white. For its part, the coastal metropolis of Los Angeles was battered by unusually heavy rain throughout the day.
Several major highways were closed due to snow and ice. Among them was Interstate 5 connecting Mexico, California, the American Northwest and Canada. More than 100,000 homes in California are without power.
A blizzard warning was in place for Los Angeles on Friday, with severe conditions in parts of the mountains surrounding the city. This is the first time since 1989 that a blizzard warning has been issued for a US West Coast metropolis. In fact, Los Angeles residents are used to year-round sun and pleasant temperatures.
