Democrats are “downtrodden”
A handful of swing states will decide whether the ruling party retains a slim majority in the Senate. In Wisconsin, candidates fight hard for every vote.
At “Sam’s Place Jazz Cafe” in Milwaukee, about fifty citizens wait at bistro tables for Democratic Senate candidate Mandela Barnes. The cafe is a well-known meeting place in the African-American neighborhood of Harrambee. Upbeat music plays in the background, but the atmosphere seems depressing. Recent polls have not favored the Democrats. This worries those present. “If we can only mobilize enough people in the cities, we can still make it,” says accountant Renee. Sitting at the bar is Susan, a lefty. “I wish Democrats would talk more about inflation,” he says. Those who swept the urgent issue under the table for a long time are now taking revenge. The abortion issue has not brought Democrats any credible voters.
