Germany has advanced to the finals of the ongoing United Cup tennis tournament in Sydney. Olympic champions Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegmund won the doubles semi-final 2-1 against host Australia.

Zverev, from Hamburg, lost a singles match for the first time since Angelique Kerber's baby break. So the doubles had to be decided – and the 26-year-old, together with doubles specialist Siegmund, beat Storm Hunter 7:6 (7:2), 6:7 (2:7) and 15:13. Match tiebreak /by Matthew Epton. The win was not confirmed until 2:19pm local time on Sunday.

In Sunday's mixed final, Germany will face Poland with world number one Ika Sviatek and Hubert Hurcox. Poland won 3–0 in the semi-final against France, against whom Germany lost 1–2 in the group stage.

“We still have a chance to win the tournament. We are very happy,” said Zverev, who gave special thanks to Siegmund and Gerber.

Zverev with his first tournament loss

Zverev missed the earlier decision against Alex de Minaur 7:5, 3:6, 4:6. It was the first individual defeat for the North German in the young season. Zverev looked confident early on against De Minaur, but lost control midway through the second set.

In the decisive third round he fell behind quickly after a break in the first game. “Sasha is a good competitor, a good player,” Di Minaur said, “and he's been very good to me for a long time.”

Gerber struggles through the game

Kerber recovered well from her emphatic two-set loss to Greek Maria Zakari earlier. Against Australian Ajla Domljanovic, the Kiel native was unfazed by her first-round loss and stormed back into contention thanks to her strong forehand and good serves.

He converted another break to 6:5 in a very dramatic third set. But she couldn't use her serve to win the match. In the tiebreak, Kerber showed class and nerve as she fended off two match points.

“For me it's the first individual win since my comeback and it's a great feeling.”
Angelique Gerber

In the end, he won 4:6, 6:2, 7:6 (9:7) and gave Germany a 1-0 lead. It was her first singles win since 2022 Wimbledon. In the quarter-final against Greece, Kerber did not play in the doubles – and Germany also had a good result against Australia in the last eight.

Getting ready for the Australian Open

The group tournament is seen as preparation for the Australian Open, which starts in Melbourne on January 14. Kerber will return to the tennis tour in the mixed event after the birth of her daughter Liana at the end of February 2023. She lost her singles in the preliminary round against Italy and France and in the quarterfinals against Greece.
