The United Nations has complained of a dramatic increase in the number of civilian casualties in Ukraine due to intensified Russian missile and drone attacks in recent weeks. In December alone, more than 100 people were killed and nearly 500 injured, according to a new report by the UN mission monitoring the human rights situation in Ukraine.
This recorded a 26.5 percent increase in civilian casualties in December compared to the previous month. Although the number of cases in November was 468, the following month the number reached 592. It was said that confirmation of many reports of deadly attacks is still pending, which is why the increase in the number of casualties may be even higher.
Reports are still under investigation that 86 civilians were killed and 416 others were killed in the wave of Russian missile and drone attacks that struck residential areas across Ukraine from December 29 to the beginning of January.
According to the UN monitoring mission, the largest number of casualties in the attacks occurred on December 29 and January 2 amid low winter temperatures. On January 4, Russian missiles hit the village of Pokrovsk and the nearby town of Rivne in eastern Ukraine, not far from the front lines. Two families – six adults and five children – were buried under the rubble of their homes. It was said that some bodies have not been found yet.
