I amAccording to a BBC study, hundreds of marriages have ended over Brexit. So far, none of these cases have been tracked, the broadcaster said on Wednesday. According to the BBCIt obtained the numbers through a freedom of information request, and is said to have been attempted by 365 couples to take advantage of the so-called “EU settlement scheme”.
The system guarantees EU citizens living in Britain before Brexit the same rights as they had before leaving the EU. You can work, live and use the health system in the UK. Spouses of any nationality can apply to this system and obtain such right of residence.
In fraud cases, EU citizens are said to have entered into marriages of convenience with non-EU nationals to exchange their right of residence – in some cases for money, in other cases with the involvement of criminal gangs. According to the BBC, none of these fake spouses were prosecuted and their right to stay was revoked.
The Home Office said fewer such cases were prosecuted during the pandemic.
