At the start of the week, UEFA was still playing for some time.
But with the invasion of Ukrainian lands by Russian forces, alarm bells are now ringing also in Nyon. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin is holding a special meeting of the Executive Committee after the latest escalation in the conflict with the first deaths.
“The meeting is scheduled for Friday morning at 10 am. The situation is being assessed and all necessary decisions taken,” UEFA told Blake. There is no further information at the moment, the association wants to provide the information again after the special session.
Above all, UEFA must clarify the thorny question of whether the Champions League final on May 28 in St Petersburg will continue. According to information from the SID, the decision has already been made: St. Petersburg will not host the final, and UEFA will withdraw the final stadium from Russia.
SID wrote: “UEFA will withdraw the Champions League final from Saint Petersburg, Russia, on Friday. Due to the Russian attack on Ukraine, according to SID information, this decision will be taken at a special meeting of the Executive Committee. The first class final is currently scheduled for May 28 in St Petersburg.
The match should take place in the Gazprom Arena – the state-owned energy company has been a major partner in UEFA for many years, and according to “Spiegel”, 40 million euros will flow into the Champions League alone.
Speaking of the European Cup: UEFA has confirmed that all Europa League and Conference League matches will take place on Thursday evening as scheduled. As the only team from Russia left in the European Cup, Zenit plays away at Betis Seville.
