Turkish Airlines is considering offering non-stop connections between Istanbul and Australia in the future.
First flights Sunrise program by QantasDirect flights between Sydney and Melbourne to London will begin in 2025. Now Turkish Airlines is considering launching non-stop connections to Sydney and Melbourne from its Istanbul hub. Simple flying reported. However, these start after one to two years.
Australia is the only continent that Turkish Airlines has not yet served
Turkish Airlines respectively Turk Hawa Yolari, as the airline will be called in the future, operates from Istanbul Airport to more than 300 destinations worldwide. Australia is the only continent not served by flights from Turkey. Turkish Airlines’ only codeshare connections with Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines bring passengers to Australia. Of the airline’s current 318 aircraft, no aircraft has the desired range and capacity to offer non-stop connections down under.
Direct flights between Istanbul and Sydney or Melbourne take around 17 hours. For these extreme long-haul routes, Turkish Airlines prefers an aircraft that offers a good combination of range and capacity in an economical way. Two aircraft are currently being considered for this business model: the Airbus A350-1000XWB and the Boeing 777X.
Whenever we make a decision about one of those flights, it will be right on time. Let’s see how both types are formed. We are not necessarily a publishing customer. We need to see proof of maturity in the Boeing 777X or the Airbus A350-1000.
Ahmed Bolat, CEO of Turkish Airlines
However, the airline’s board of directors wants to see the development of the two aircraft before placing the final order. The first Turkish Airlines flights between Turkey and Australia can be expected as early as 2026 and 2027.
Conclusion on direct flights between Istanbul and Australia
Ultra long-haul routes are challenging for both passengers and crew. However, there is a lot of hype that a plane can operate for such a long distance. After Project Sunrise launches in 2025, the next longest route to Down Under could already be in the next year. We are curious to see if Turkish Airlines will fly to Australia and which airline they will choose.
