  • Mujinga Kambundji secures gold for the 200m at the European Championships in Munich.
  • For the lady from Berne it is her first major outdoor title and second medal at this European Championships after the silver over 100 metres.
  • Switzerland raises the total number of European championships to 12 medals.

Over 100 metres, Mujinga Kamponge had just missed the win at the Munich Olympic Stadium. The 30-year-old from Berne can no longer be beaten at the half-track. She showed a perfect race, coming out of the corner as the leader and also keeping her favorite Dina Asher Smith behind in the finish. With a time of 22.32 seconds, the British fell to second place with a difference of 0.11 seconds, and Denmark’s Ida Karstoft came in third.

For Kambundji, it’s the first outdoor title in a major event. Before competing for the title in Munich, she had already won a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Doha (200m) and at the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam (100m). Her palm also includes the gold in the over 60m world championships at this year’s World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.

The Swiss national team equals the record

Kambundji took the Swiss Athletics’s fifth medal in these continental championships. Thus, the Swiss delegation equaled the record for 2016 in Amsterdam. The competitions last two days. Overall, Switzerland now has 12 medals in the European Championships.
