Hockey – USA enters the knockout stage as the only team in the men’s tournament with the most points. Finland, Sweden and Russia will also qualify directly for the quarter-finals.
The Americans defeated Germany at the end of the preliminary round 3:2. Although the US selection was delayed by only two minutes against the significantly improved Germans, they made a decisive lead of 3:1 until the 43rd minute.
In preparation for the round of 16
Despite their unchallenged 5-0 win over China, Canada, who finished second in Group A, will have to wrap through the round of 16. Where there is again a duel with the unchanging victorious host. In the first duel, the Canadian selection was 3-0 after just ten minutes.
The perfect result
The first match in Group C between Finland and Sweden entered into overtime, and ended with a perfect score for both teams. Both qualified directly for the quarter-finals, thanks to the Finns winning 4:3 as the group leader and the Swedes by seven points as the group runner-up. Harry Pessonen of SCL Tigers scored the winning goal after 62 minutes for the Finns, who had fallen 3-0 in the past after three Swedish goals in play and managed to catch up in the last division.
Slovakia defeats Latvia
Slovakia finished third in Group C after winning 5-2 in a head-to-head match against Latvia. While the Slovaks had to deal with Germany in the round of 16, the Latvians meet the surprising team from Denmark.
