The United States announces “open and professional” talks with the Taliban

D.The United States has said the first private meeting between top US and Taliban representatives was “open and professional” after the radical Islamist group came to power in Afghanistan. During the talks in Toka, the US delegation focused on security and terrorism issues, safe departure of American citizens, other foreigners and Afghans, and compliance with human rights, including the meaningful participation of women and girls in all aspects of Afghan society. This was stated in a statement issued by the US State Department on Sunday.

However, the US side reiterated that the Taliban would be determined not only by their words but also by their actions. According to the ministry, the two sides also discussed the provision of comprehensive humanitarian assistance.

The Taliban returned to power in August, 20 years after the United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan. Since then, the Islamists have sought international recognition for their interim government and provided humanitarian assistance to prevent famine in a country dependent on foreign development funds.
