The third stage of the Tour de France – Jermay seizes the opportunity – Carapaz is now in yellow – Sport

  • Biniyam Jirmay wins the third stage of the Tour de France over 230 kilometers from Piacenza to Turin in a sprint.
  • Richard Carapaz takes over “Maillot jaune” from Tadej Pogacar.
  • The delegation is scheduled to travel from Italy to France on Tuesday.

For the first time ever, a rider from Eritrea has won a stage of the Tour de France. Biniyam Girmay (Intermarche-Wanti) beat two established rivals in a Q3 sprint after a flat 230km from Piacenza to Turin. She succeeds Colombian Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) and Belgian Arnaud De Lee (Lotto Destiny).

Previously, Daryl Impey and Rob Hunter (both South Africa) were the only two Africans to have won a single day at the 'Grand Boucle' in Palmares.

Mass fall – and a split in Van der Poel

Less than two kilometres from the finish line, fierce battles for position in the field led to a mass crash. As a result, several drivers were unable to participate in the battle for victory. The Alpecin-Deceuninck team, which included last year’s points winner Jasper Philipsen, was already weakened. Its leading driver Mathieu van der Poel suffered a malfunction and was no longer able to catch up with the front.

It became clear early on that there would be an end to the race. Frenchman Fabien Grellier (Total Energies) tried to escape alone, but was caught again less than 30 kilometres from the finish.

Carapaz steals “Maillot jaune” from Pogacar

Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) took over the overall leader's yellow jersey from Tadej Pogacar (UAE). The Ecuadorian benefited from finishing 14th, a few places ahead of Pogacar. Overall, four riders were tied in the overall classification before the stage.

When determining who is first overall, the driver with the best average positions is in the lead.

And this is how it continues

The Tour leaves Italy on Tuesday during the fourth stage and crosses the French border for the first time. From Pinerolo it is about 140 mountainous kilometers to Valloire. The highlight of the day was conquering the Col du Galibier 20 kilometers from the finish.
