The patch removes the force-installed Windows Backup application from the application list

Microsoft has kept its word: as announced, a forcibly installed Windows backup application can now be removed from the list of installed applications to avoid further problems.

Corporate environments are affected

This comes from a report by Newin Magazine Online Outside. This issue does not affect regular Windows Home users, but rather affects installations in corporate environments.

This concerns the automatic installation of the Windows Backup app on Windows 10 Pro 22H2 and LTSC Enterprise systems, which is causing problems for some IT and system administrators because it doesn't work (intentionally) in most corporate environments.

Anyone who started the application only received the message “This functionality is not supported by your organization.” Microsoft then posted an FAQ about the backup app, promising that the Windows team is working on a solution.

This solution exists now – it appears to have been released without much notice. Microsoft Now wrote on Our Windows Backup FAQ page is below:

Explanation of the system application

  • Because Windows Backup is a system component, it cannot be removed. However, we will release a future Windows update that will prevent Windows Backup from appearing on certain user interface (UI) screens for Azure Active Directory (AAD) or Active Directory (AD) users who have the Pro, Education, or Enterprise -Run editions of Windows 10 or Windows 11 .
  • After installing a future Windows update, Windows Backup will no longer appear in the All Apps or Installed Apps lists.

Microsoft kept its word and removed the backup app from the All Apps and Installed Apps lists with the optional update from Patch Day in January and February. Any Windows security updates released on or after January 25, 2024 will now hide the backup app on a company-managed device.
