The European Union approves a vaccine against the dangerous tropical virus

EU Commission launches first vaccine against mosquito-borne diseases Chikungunya viruses L. The Brussels authority said that national authorities must now decide who should get the vaccine. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), 16 cases of chikungunya fever were reported in Germany in 2022.

According to the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention, these cases were not called cases of original transmission. In other words: the infection occurred, for example, while you were on holiday outside the EU and not from a mosquito that lives here.

The Asian tiger mosquito is also found in Germany.

According to experts, the Asian tiger mosquito population has also stabilized in Germany as a result of climate change. Animals can transmit the virus. This species of mosquito actually lives in tropical regions. A recent report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control confirms the presence of the Aedes albopictus mosquito in 13 EU countries, including Germany and popular holiday destinations such as Austria, France, Italy and Spain.

According to the State Department, the disease is accompanied by fever and joint problems. However, severe cases are rare. The disease is particularly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. About a week after the bite, those infected suddenly develop severe joint pain in their hands and feet, accompanied by a high fever and a rash. This can also include loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting. Deaths are rare, and recovery often takes months, and in rare cases, several years.
