The DFB team faces Kerr-less Australia at the Olympics

Now it's official: Australia's footballers will have to make do without injured star striker Sam Kerr at the Olympics.

Not in Paris: Sam Kerr.

Sam Kerr has had to battle injuries several times throughout his career, including missing the opening games of the World Cup in his home country in July – at the time it was due to a calf injury.

Five months ago, the Chelsea FC striker suffered a cruciate ligament injury and is therefore yet to play this calendar year. Kerr will not be in time for the games in Paris, the Australian Association announced on Tuesday as part of the German Olympic team's bid for opponents' next internationals. The Matildas captain will instead continue his rehabilitation program at his club.

Like Kerr, midfielder Amy Sayer also missed the Olympics.

Australia, fourth in the World Cup, are the DFB's opening opponents in Group B at the Summer Games (July 25 to August 11) in Marseille on July 25. Horst Hrubesch's team faces USA (July 28) and Zambia (July 31).
