ARD removes all Winnetou movies from the program.
The debate over cultural appropriation and the awakened society continues. While game publisher Ravensburger takes Winnetou’s children’s book out of scope, Winnetou-Glaces are still found in Swiss freezers. This causes criticism.
Films about the Indian leader have also caused controversy in recent weeks. Now the German ARD has put a line and banned all Winnetou movies. The announcer confirmed this to “picture”. ARD has already allowed all Winnetou licenses to expire in 2020. No new licenses will be acquired in the future either.

SRF also no longer shows “Winnetou”.
When asked by Blick, the SRF also confirmed that Winnetou no longer had a place in the program. “SRF has not licensed Winnetou and has no plans to do so at this time. This means that broadcasts on SRF channels are not planned,” a statement read.
In the meantime, there is controversy about banning the word “Indian” altogether. For example, Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg no longer broadcasts episodes of “Sandman” in which the word Indian appears.
According to Bild, the social media team ZDF has also asked its users to avoid the word “Indians in communication”. ZDF later apologized for the unfortunate wording. At Bild’s request, the announcer announced that Winito’s films would continue to be shown. (zis/bnr)
