The British variant of the coronavirus is considered more contagious – but perhaps not more deadly than other virus variants, as it was assumed meanwhile. A new study has been published in the popular medical journal “The Lancet”.
A team of experts said that people infected with the more contagious British variant known as B1.1.7 did not show any more severe symptoms and did not have a higher risk of death. However, they had a higher viral load. Why is this further further investigation.
‘The data provides initial reassurance’
The researchers said: “Our data provide some initial reassurance that the severity of patients in hospital with this alternative does not differ significantly from the severity of patients without this alternative.” The British alternative is now prevalent in Europe. (SDA / euc)
