“Billy! Billy! Billy! I was shocked just before 9pm in Zurich’s Hallenstadion. And then there she is – with Pam and Jump I’m suddenly on stage: Billie Eilish (20). Exceptional artist, Gen Z idol. The crowd is angry.
Only her brother Phineas O’Connell (24) and drummer Andrew Marshall is seen with her. A kind of podium extends from the stage to the audience. Billie Eilish sweeps the stage, jumping and rambling, making the audience jump and dance.
“Don’t be a fool”
When Billie Eilish addresses the audience, the hall lights up. She explains the three rules of her concert to her audience: “Don’t be late. Don’t judge anyone. Have fun.” The lyrics of the songs sit with the viewers. Sometimes Billie Eilish’s vocals almost get lost – but when she and her brother perform their new song “TV” on acoustic guitar and Eilish’s voice floats in Hallenstadion, everyone gets too quiet for a moment.
Anouk’s mother cancels everything for Billie Eilish
What attracts fans of Billie Eilish so much? Anouk, 9, from Zurich, told Blake: “Billy is the same. Don’t care about trends. Your music is so amazing and inspiring.” Billie Eilish sings about issues that touch the generation – depression, a toxic relationship. Courage and strength. Draws attention to climate change.
Anouk started playing guitar because of Eilish. She accompanies her mother to the concert. She already had concert tickets for Nick Cave’s (64) performance at Montreux on DVD. For her, it was most important for her daughter to be able to watch the concert. “Billie Eilish is a good role model,” she says.
Love, gratitude and political statements
During the concert, Eilish sometimes asks her fans to take care of each other. To be thankful for the one you love. Close your eyes and focus completely on yourself. Practically a little yoga with Billie Eilish.
Rest from jumping before continuing. There is also space for a political statement. I dedicated the song “Your Strength” to the women of this world. Especially those in the home United States who now no longer have access to legal abortions.
Eilish’s strength by displaying it all at once. At the end there is a rain of scraps of paper. The fans are sure to be “happier than ever” after the concert.
