The steering wheel falls off: US authorities are checking Tesla cars

Washington. NHTSA has targeted US electric car maker Tesla after complaints it had missing steering wheel mounts. The US agency announced on its website on Wednesday that it has launched a preliminary investigation into two reports of steering wheels falling off while driving.

According to NHTSA, the vehicles were delivered unbolted. So the investigation includes 120,000 Tesla Model Ys from 2023. Initially, there was no statement from Tesla.
the “News agencyReports indicate that one of the two complaints stems from a now-viral Twitter post in which a family documented the steering wheel of their new Tesla car falling off while driving. According to media reports, Tesla initially charged the vehicle’s owner $103.96 to fix the defect, only to remove the fee shortly thereafter. The family has since reportedly received an alternate Form Y.

Is a call coming?
NHTSA authorities will now assess the prevalence of the problem before deciding whether affected Model Y vehicles need to be recalled. Tesla recalled thousands of Model Y cars last month after discovering that the car’s rear seat mounting bolts were not properly secured, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
Recently, there have been other recalls of Tesla electric vehicles, such as “the edgeReports indicate that many of these devices have been fixed through software updates, such as the more than 360,000 Tesla Autopilot-equipped vehicles that were recalled in February due to vehicle safety and traffic compliance concerns. Steering wheels have also been reported to fall off on other Tesla EV models. These incidents did not result in the recall of the affected vehicles. Tesla shares fell 3 percent in early US trade.
