Before introducing the new Midnight Cherry Red color for the Model Y from the German Gigafactory, Tesla kept things exciting for a long time. Two years before the official start of production, CEO Elon Musk announced that he would have the most modern paint shop in the world, which would enable breathtaking colors. After that, it was talked about again and again until Tesla introduced the new Quicksilver and Midnight Cherry Red trims in October 2022. The Model Y is now being delivered in silver, but not Cherry Red. But on Thursday night, a new red color for the premium electric cars Model S and Model X suddenly appeared in Tesla’s configurator (see photo).

3200 additional cost for a new Tesla paint

In the US and Germany, Tesla calls it “Ultra Red”. There is no other color choice for the Model S and Model X, because as with the German Model Y, the previous variant, which in this case was called Red Multi-Coat, was omitted. The surcharge for the new Red Rose in the US is from the last $2,500 to $3,000, in Germany Tesla is asking for an additional €3,200 for it. In China, where the configurator has also changed color, 25,000 RMB (about 3,400 euros).

Compared to the previous red variant, Ultra Red looks a bit more intense and darker, as the name suggests. This applies at least to the display on the screen. In the US Configurator, Tesla lists March as the delivery date for the Model S and Model X in the new color. So it will be changed without much prior notice. In fact, in a recent Fremont drone video, spotters actually spotted several Model Xs that looked like a very red paint job.

For new orders from Germany, the Model S and Model X must be delivered in Super Red between April and June depending on the component, in addition to the four other colors available for it. For the German Midnight Red cherry-red Model Y, on the other hand, Tesla announced Thursday that deliveries won’t be expected until July-August. The Model S and Model X have quietly outgrown the new red, so to speak, and all over the world because Tesla produces them all at its flagship factory in Fremont.

The German Model Y should still stand out

The Model 3 and Model Y also come from there, but the old multi-layer was still in the US component on Thursday. Right now, there are three different red options in the Tesla universe depending on model and region, though the color selection for each model is limited to five (the remaining four are identical apart from Quicksilver instead of Midnight Silver Metallic on the German Model Y). At least with the Model Y, the new cherry red color cannot be expected to be unified, because Tesla’s director in charge of all gigafactories, Tom Zhu, recently made it clear that this livery isn’t possible even in the newest ones in Texas and that there are no plans to make that change.
