China suspends economic deal with Australia China’s National Development and Reform Commission announced on Thursday that Beijing has suspended the “Strategic Economic Dialogue Agreement” due to the “current status” of the Australian government. Last month, Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s government rescinded an agreement between China and the Australian state of Victoria on the Belt and Road initiative, known as the New Silk Road.
Beijing has accused Australian authorities of “ideological discrimination” and announced that it would “suspend all action under the agreement indefinitely”.
Relations between Australia and China are very tense. Canberra announced on Monday that it was reviewing and canceling a Chinese company’s lease agreement for the strategically important port of Darwin.
As part of its Silk Road project, China is expanding transport, trade and industrial infrastructure in many countries. Many states, including Australia and the United States, are critical of Beijing’s growing influence, and say Beijing is alienating the program’s companies and programs to expand its geopolitical influence.
