Tennis: Medvedev remains number one

Tennis

Daniil Medvedev will treat the US Open title defense as number one. By reaching the $920,625,250 Hard Court Championship final in Los Cabos, the 26-year-old Russian confirmed his number one spot in the ATP rankings on Friday. He was recently banned from participating in a major tournament at Wimbledon due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

After beating Miomir Kecmanovic (SRB) 7:6 (7/0) 6:1, he will face Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the battle for his first title of the season. It’s the fourth final of the season for Medvedev, having lost the previous three at the Australian Open, at Hertogenbusch and Halle. Nouri won his second semi-final against Felix Auger-Aliassime 6:4 3:6 6:3.

At the ATP 500 tournament in Washington, which was held at the same time and brought in $2,108,110, only quarter-final duels were on the program. Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios showed good tension against American Frances Tiafoe when he saved at least five match points in the second set tiebreak. The Australian finally won 6:7 (5/7) 7:6 (14/12) 6:2.

The US Open is approaching

In the semi-finals, Kyrgios now has to deal with unseeded Swede Mikael Ymir, who defeated American Sebastian Korda 6:2 5:7 6:3. In the other semi-final match, he meets Russian top seed Andrei Rublio and Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka. Giving local champ Geoffrey John no chance in 6:2 6:3, Robleo defeated 16th-seeded Briton Nishioka Daniel Evans 7:6 (7/5) 4:6 7:5.

The US Open begins on August 29. In addition to Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic, who refuses to be vaccinated against Covid-19 prescribed in Canada and the United States and is therefore missing, there is also a question mark behind the emergence of Spaniard Rafael Nadal. The reason was an abdominal muscle injury that forced him to surrender before the Wimbledon semi-finals.
