Belinda Bencic in the second round of the US Open.
With Belinda Bencic, at least one Swiss woman has reached the second round of the US Open. St. Gallen’s No. 13 fights against veteran German Andrea Petkovic (WTA 104) despite a mixed winning performance of 6:2, 4:6, 6:4.
Last year’s quarter-finalists and 2019 semi-finalists got off to a great start in the scorching sun of over 30 degrees and immediately won the top eight points. Only then did the 34-year-old Petkovic, who will be ending her career in the next few weeks, balance the game. In the second round, Bencic made up a 1:4 deficit, but gave it up again.
After a set ten-minute heat break, it takes the score to 4:4 before Bencic can use his first break chance. After 2:12 hours, the Olympic champion uses her first match point for a hard-fought victory. The next opponent on Thursday is Romanian Sorana Cerstia (WTA 37), against whom she was unable to win in two attempts. Most recently, Bencic lost in three sets in Cincinnati two weeks ago.
Golubek loses again in the first round
Viktorija Golubic fails to win the main draw of the US Open at her sixth attempt. The 29-year-old from Zurich, who only qualified for the main draw, lost in the first round to 8th seed American Jessica Pegula in just 65 minutes 2:6, 2:6.
Golubic is in all respects inferior to the billionaire’s daughter Buffalo in the facility’s third largest slot in Flushing Meadows. It allows twice as many non-forced errors as Winner (20:10) and can never put Pegula under stress. It also only gets sent three times.
This ended a disappointing Grand Slam year for last year’s Wimbledon quarter-finals. In Australia, Paris and New York she lost in the first round, only at Wimbledon she won the match. (SDA)
