Djokovic’s decision has definitely been made
Novak Djokovic (35) had hoped to change the situation in the United States so that he could enter and play in the US Open. He also relied on the help of US President Joe Biden (79) himself. But nothing will come of it now.
“I don’t think the exception is realistic,” Novak Djokovic, 35, recently told Serbian television station RTS. The tennis star meant his entry to the United States. And he was right: the Serbs are not allowed into the United States and therefore will not fight for their 22nd Grand Slam title at the US Open.
“The US Open does not require players to be vaccinated, but will respect the US government’s position on the entry of non-vaccinated non-US citizens,” tournament organizers said in a statement.
Joker was hoping for Biden
Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic (50) has previously appealed to the US government, more specifically to President Joe Biden (79). The 2001 Wimbledon winner hopes “Maybe Biden will change his mind. There are a lot of crazy things going on in the world. Something changes every day.”
However, what will not change is the status of Djokovic’s vaccination. “I am not a restaurant and I have no intention of getting vaccinated,” he said after his recent Wimbledon win.
Tennis legend John McEnroe has already campaigned for the 35-year-old to be allowed into the USA: “Let the guy in. Anything else is ridiculous.” Later, many tennis fans petitioned the government to grant the Serbs an exception.
Online petition for exemption
“There is absolutely no reason at this point in the pandemic not to allow Djokovic to play the 2022 US Open,” reads the text of the petition on change.org. The government and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) must work together to make the exception possible. “If unvaccinated Americans are allowed to play, then Djokovic, as one of the sport’s legends, should also be allowed to play.”
By Thursday morning, just over 21,600 signatures had gathered. But that doesn’t help Djokovic anymore. (Che)
