Eight years ago, Belinda Bencic (25, WTA 21) wept bitterly in Charleston. The 17-year-old lost her first match in the WTA clay court semi-final and fears the chance to reach the final will never come again. This was known to be unfounded. She has now won four championships. And now eastern Switzerland is celebrating its first premiere in South Carolina.
In the semi-finals of the WTA 500 tournament against Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrowa (27, WTA 54), she lived up to her role as the favourite. She beats 6:4, 6:3 and is on the sand for the first time in the final.
5 matches in 14 minutes
Bencic starts the game strong. After just 14 minutes, I was up 4-1 with a break. But then the Olympic champion relaxes a little and allows her opponent to three games in a row. At the right moment, she flips it over again, starts again with a break and concludes the sentence a little later.
In the second round, there was initially a little more resistance from Alexandrova. However, they leave the chance for a break at first. Bencic’s answer follows immediately. With a score of 3:2, the Swiss made a break for the serve a little later on the third attempt. It is the initial decision. After 78 minutes, I used my first match point.
In the final on Sunday evening (7.30 p.m.), Bencic plays for her fifth win of the tournament. Her opponent is Ons Jabeur (WTA 10). The 27-year-old Tunisian beat American Amanda Anisimova (WTA 47) 2:6, 6:1, 6:4 in the semi-finals. (bear)
