Basel Tattoo Goes “Down”: Highland Dancers from Australia Come to the Knee of the Rhine

In its 17th edition, Basel Tattoo travels from the US to Australia. But visitors can also expect highlights from Singapore, Poland and Switzerland.

As for the Osscot Highland Dancers, Basel’s performance is a reunion: they were the last guests at Tattoo in 2017.

Those responsible for Basel Tattoo are already busy preparing for edition number 17, which will take place from July 19 to 27. As already usual, project highlights will be announced at the start of the pre-sale. Again, the military music festival has 1,000 attendees, tattoo producer Eric Juilliard and host Rene Hafliger said at a media conference Friday. Some active people need to go especially long distances.

OzScot Highland Dancers from Australia will perform in the Tattoo Arena in the Barracks; The dancers were last guests in Basel in 2017. The Australian Army Band hails from the same continent.

Seven others out of a total of twenty-one organizations: the United States Army Field Band, One Voice Children’s Choir, the Big Bike Orchestra from the United States, then Poland, the Singapore Police Force Band, the Swiss Army Brass Band – and local heroes: the Basel Tattoo Guard and the Basel Tattoo Choir.

An additional permit is required for the US Military Band

“In the case of the United States Army Field Band, the regulations were changed,” said Eric Juilliard. “This creation is based in Washington and doesn’t really work abroad. We and Edinburgh Tattoo will now make an exception. 50 children and young people are coming to Basel for a performance by a vocal children’s choir. The choir has already performed at the White House and is a YouTube hit.

The structure of the festival remains the same. There are eleven programs of the same type, nine in the evening and two in the afternoon. On Saturday, July 20, approximately 2,500 active participants will march through the city center, including 40 guest organizations. “July has traditionally been a quiet month,” says Letizia Elia, CEO of Basel Tourism. “It’s different now thanks to the tattoo.” The event generates about 10,000 overnight stays.

There is a change in the start time of the program on the first Sunday: it starts at 7:30 p.m. Entry fee has not changed. “Because otherwise everything would be expensive,” Häfliger winked, “and you can now say that Basel Tattoo would be cheap.”
