From October 1, the Swiss ID card is no longer sufficient to enter Great Britain – a passport is required from then on.
The Federal Foreign Office (FDFA) recalled this on Monday, August 30th.
According to the UK Government website, you need a Swiss passport valid for the entire period of your stay in the UK, but no visa is required. On the other hand, the identity card will no longer be sufficient from October 1, 2021. Permanent residents, cross-border travelers or those entering for health reasons are excluded.
The new regulation applies not only to Swiss nationals but also to visitors from other EFTA countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway – and citizens of all EU countries.
London cited security reasons for this last December. At the same time, after long negotiations, a trade agreement between London and Brussels was annexed by Brexit – Great Britain’s exit from the European Union.
