From October 1, the Swiss ID card is no longer sufficient to enter Great Britain – a passport is required from then on.

The Federal Foreign Office (FDFA) recalled this on Monday, August 30th.

According to the UK government website, a Swiss passport, valid for the entire period of your stay in the UK, is required for entry, but does not require a visa. On the other hand, the identity card will no longer be sufficient from October 1, 2021. Permanent residents, cross-border travelers or those entering for health reasons are excluded.

The new regulation applies not only to Swiss nationals but also to visitors from other EFTA countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway – and citizens of all EU countries.

London cited security reasons for this last December. At the same time, after long negotiations, a trade agreement between London and Brussels was annexed by Brexit – Great Britain’s exit from the European Union.
