Before the match against YB, Zurich coach Andre Breitenreiter excited his team, as he did successfully before the victory over Basel: with the clear announcement that the hat-trick against the champions constitutes big points on its way to the championship title.
In public, such bold tones were never heard from the city club. That changes on Easter Saturday evening. Because Zurich scores the next big points by beating YB! The third win in a row against Notch Meister eases the captain’s tongues.
“We just wanted to get those big points against YB so we could celebrate with the fans on Helvetiaplatz at the end of the season! We want to bring the title back to Zurich,” Breitenreiter said after the masterpiece against YB.
Already next week, Mr. Sofa?
Now there is public talk of the title as a target for this season. The time has come! Because now it will soon be possible to seal the 13th championship title for Zurich and the first since 2009.
In theory, this is possible within a week. Because if the FCZ Basel players lose at Easter Monday in Sion and the following week against Lucerne, then Zurich will suddenly have an incomparable 17 points with their win in Sion five laps before the end.
The problem is in the next 31st round: Zurich could only become champion on the sofa and not on the field, because after winning the tourbillon on Saturday, you had to wait for Basel’s result on Sunday.
Zurich can become a champion in Basel
On the other hand, if Basel and Zurich remain unbeaten until the head-to-head confrontation on May 1, there will be an almost bizarre scenario that FCZ can secure the title in Joggeli of all places. Regardless of the upcoming results, the guest sector will be expanded to succeed in Basel because many FCZ fans are expected. For the title party 16 years after the unforgettable Finalissima 2006, a threesome will likely be needed.
In the event of a tie in the Classics, the leader’s celebration will likely be pushed back to the first leg in St. Gallen on May 7.
If FCZ doesn’t make a decision in St. Gallen either, there is a risk of a property party during the week. Because Zurich will play third to last (at home against Lausanne) and also in the penultimate round (away from home in Lugano) on Thursday.
FCZ sounds: “It’s still early days, but it’s an important step in the right direction”(02:40)
